African American Read In @ Addlestone Today

The Addlestone Library will host the African American Read In today from noon until 2pm. Many faculty members from the College of Charleston will read for 10 minutes from one of their favorite authors.

The Addlestone will have a display of African American fiction and non-fiction available for browsing and check-out. These titles are representative of the 22 page recommended bibliography that will also be available at this event.

The Addlestone has three databases that are particularly related to this event and African American literature.

Oxford African American Studies Center (Full Text)
Includes the complete texts of Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience, The Encyclopedia of African American History, Black Women in America, African American National Biography, and The Concise Oxford Companion to African American Literature, plus selected articles from many other reference works published by Oxford University Press. The database also includes over 6,000 biographies and over 1,000 images, as well as maps, charts, tables and primary sources with additional commentaries.

The African American Experience
A collection of resources on African American life covering such topics as history, biography, literature, arts, education, civil rights, politics, folklore, etc

African American Poetry (LION) (Full Text)
The early history of African American poetry, from the first recorded poem by an African American (Lucy Terry Prince's 'Bars Fight', c.1746) to the major poets of the nineteenth century, including Paul Laurence Dunbar and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.

CSH Database Protocols Added

The library has added the CSH Protocols database.
Coverage includes cell and molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, protein science, and imaging. Protocols are presented step-by-step and edited in the style that has made Molecular Cloning, Antibodies, Cells and many other CSH manuals. Protocols will be continuously expanded, updated, and annotated by the originators and users of the techniques.

Iter Italicum
A comprehensive finding list of previously uncatalogued or incompletely catalogued Renaissance humanistic manuscripts found in libraries and collections all over the world. Originally published in six volumes between 1963 and 1992.

The John Milton Bibliography (MRTS Online)
This bibliography tries to bring together all manuscripts and editions of John Milton's works and all studies and critical statements concerning his life and works, all allusions and quotations, and all significant imitations during the years 1624-1799.

RefWorks Subscription Ending

The Addlestone Library will not be renewing the subscription to RefWorks, a citation service database which expired at the end of December. The reason is because of its low use. The library is evaluating alternative services that are more user-friendly.

If you have any bibliographic information stored on RefWorks, you should remove it at your earliest convenience in order to guarantee that your research information is preserved for future use.

Research says "Google Generation" is Myth

Librarians Are Needed After All

"A new report commissioned by JISC and the British Library, counters the common assumption that the ‘Google Generation’ – young people born or brought up in the Internet age – is the most adept at using the web. The report by the CIBER research team at University College London claims that, although young people demonstrate an ease and familiarity with computers, they rely on the most basic search tools and do not possess the critical and analytical skills to asses the information that they find on the web.

The report ‘Information Behaviour of the Researcher of the Future’ 35 pages; PDF) also shows that research-behavior. “These findings add to our growing understanding of subjects that should concern all who work in further and higher education – the changing needs of our students and researchers and how libraries can meet their needs.”ur traits that are commonly associated with younger users – impatience in search and navigation, and zero tolerance for any delay in satisfying their information needs – are now the norm for all age-groups, from younger pupils and undergraduates through to professors.

This report shows the many roles the info professional can and needs to play in an age when many think all answers are only one-click away. Btw, Google is a name grabber but this paper is more about online and web info in general." *

SPORTDiscus with Full Text (Full Text)
Provides full text for more than 415 journals indexed in SPORTDiscus. Of those, nearly 250 have cover-to-cover indexing in SPORTDiscus. Contains more than 700,000 full-text articles dating back to 1985.

Tests in Print (TIP) serves as a comprehensive bibliography to all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language. Comprehensive nursing & allied health research database, providing full text for more than 620 journals indexed in CINAHL. The database also provides full text for 218 books/monographs. Full text coverage dates back to 1937.

Dissertations & Theses: Full Text
The ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database includes over 2 million master's theses and dissertations, with over 60,000 titles added every year. It's a great resource for researchers in a wide variety of fields.

Golfing on Rivers Green - Thursday

On Thursday April 19th the Friends of the Library are hosting the first of several golf events. Members of the CofC Men’s Golf Team will be outside the library on the Rivers Green to give golf tips to students, faculty and staff, and other campus visitors. There will be a practice putting green for those who want to put their game to the test. Attendees who join the Friends of the Library will be entered into a raffle for several great prizes, including two week-long passes for the Senior PGA Championship, tournament apparel, a CofC golf bag and other prizes. The Senior PGA championship trophy will also displayed for viewing.

GOLF EXHIBIT OPENS TODAY

Special Collections has produced an extensive golf exhibit on the second and third floors of the library. They've created a terrific display of photographs, antique golf clubs and golf balls, trophies, and paintings about the history of sport in the region. It's a impressive exhibit about golf, about the lowcountry and about fashion. (you should see the buttons!)

Co-Presenters: PROF. TIM CALLAHAN, Geology and Environmental Geosciences, and BRAD REED, President and CEO of Water Missions International (WMI). WMI is a local activist organization that provides clean water technologies for people in developing countries and disaster areas.

Every individual’s life and health is dependent upon having an adequate supply of clean water. Yet 2.6 billion people lack access to this basic resource, according to a 2006 U.N. report. While water shortage is reaching an epidemic global crisis, multi-national corporations are increasingly treating water as a commodity to be bought and sold. Is water a basic human right? Following the film, Prof. Tim Callahan will discuss the international politics and policies of water resources. The WMI representative will talk about the work of this Charleston-based organization in providing water treatment technology for developing regions around the world.

You know you have always wanted to excel with Excel, but you still feel somewhat clueless when it comes to making this thing work and sticking all those numbers in cells. Well, it’s really not hard when you know what buttons to mash (and in what order). Michael Phillips is very gentle with Excel newbies and can show you the very basics of how to create a spreadsheet from scratch using Microsoft’s Excel. No prior experience necessary. If you can operate a mouse, you can do this. Faculty, staff, and students welcome. Free seats for the first 28 registrants.

New Central Search in Library Catalog

A new Central Search tool now allows one to search multiple resources in a subject area simultaneously. This tool is available from the Library Online catalog on many of the subject guides: http://www.cofc.edu/~library/browse/index.html.

This new Central Search tool appears at the top of the subject guide for a particular area. In the History subject guide for example, this tool allows one to search the following seven databases simultaneously.

Resulting hits are sorted by the relevance of the search terms without regard to the databases from which the hit occurs. The articles can be linked directly from the search list. Related subject terms appear along the side which can be clicked to further narrow a search from the results.

Documentary Film: “WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?” (2006)

Presenter: PROF. SETH PRITCHARD, Biology Dept., will lead a discussion and answer questions after the film. This entertaining documentary provides a post-mortem exploration of GM’s electric car, the EV1. Massive numbers of this model were intentionally destroyed even as it was gaining in popularity. Director Chris Paine playfully searches for the various “culprits” involved in its demise as though this were a murder mystery with a host of suspects. His goal in making the film is to spread awareness to consumers about alternative modes of transportation.

Documentary Film: “SAVING SANDY ISLAND” (2006)

Presenters: TRENHOLM WALKER, lawyer, and DANA BEACH, Director of the Coastal Conservation League. The CCL and the Sandy Island Community Action Club collaborated over the course of 3 years to turn away development from the island and to provide permanent protection. Trenholm Walker provided legal representation for the residents pro bono during that period and served as the liaison between the community and the Coastal Conservation League. Q & A to follow.

Presenter: BILL SAUNDERS, Director and CEO of the Committee on Better Racial Assurance (COBRA).

What was the African American culture of Johns Island like fifty or more years ago, and how was it impacted by the development of Kiawah Island? More importantly, what kind of impact will currently planned urban development have on Johns Island? Bill Saunders will talk about the history and culture of this rural sea island – the second largest island on the East Coast – and the potentially devastating consequences that urban development will have on long-standing communities and Gullah culture.

Longleaf pine ecosystems once covered 90 million acres of the Southeastern Coastal Plain with magnificent forests and astonishing biodiversity. The story of longleaf – exploited by old growth timbering and turpentining, industrial forests and urban development – is the history of the economy and culture of our region. Today, the longleaf ecosystem is 97% gone, and with it many rare plants and animals. Come and learn what you can do to help preserve and restore the Francis Marion and other bejeweled Southeastern forests.

MARCELA RABI, Hispanic Studies, will highlight the Amazon Rainforest as a case study analysis of the ways in which human activities cause environmental degradation, focusing on the micro- and macro-politics of development. She will show the connection between local sustainability, governmental policies, foreign interests and other stakeholders in the spectrum of rainforest deforestation.

Presenter: PROF. JOHN RASHFORD, Anthropologist, Ethnobotanist, Department of Sociology/Anthropology. Prof. Rashford takes a look at the root of the world environmental crisis as it relates to culture-based human reproduction success and our need for an ever-increasing mode of intensive adaptation. He discusses humanity’s species-specific capacity for innovation, but contends that ecological crises can be resolved only with a deep comprehension of the paradigm from which these problems developed.

Thinking, when trained in abstract ways, can easily become alienated from nature’s rhythms. Such thinking, when applied to nature management policies, can create disruptive ecological effects. Spend some time with Dan Shelton in this relaxing outdoor workshop where he will teach participants ways to reconnect with our natural sensory perceptions.

Media Collections Welcomes New Semester

Addlestone Media Collections Welcomes Faculty to the new semester. We are here to support your teaching with films on video. Media Collections is located in Addlestone 350. We have video titles (VHS and DVD) and viewing stations. Come by and browse our collection in person or use the library online catalog. Check out a title to show in your class or put a title on reserve for your students to view in the library.

Faculty may check out up to three videos for three days. Students may view videos in-library only in Media Collections. Faculty members may put video titles on reserve to guarantee that specific titles are accessible to their students. Such videos will be held at the library Circulation Desk and will be available for in-library use during Circulation Desk hours.

You may order videos to be used for the educational support of your teaching from your departmental book budgets. Requests may be sent through your departmental liaison. Departmental liaisons are listed here: http://www.cofc.edu/~library/cd/liaisons.html.

Presenter: PROF. SETH PRITCHARD, Biology Dept., will lead a discussion and answer questions after the film. This entertaining documentary provides a post-mortem exploration of GM’s electric car, the EV1. Massive numbers of this model were intentionally destroyed even as it was gaining in popularity. Director Chris Paine playfully searches for the various “culprits” involved in its demise as though this were a murder mystery with a host of suspects. His goal in making the film is to spread awareness to consumers about alternative modes of transportation.

Presenters: TRENHOLM WALKER, lawyer, and DANA BEACH, Director of the Coastal Conservation League. The CCL and the Sandy Island Community Action Club collaborated over the course of 3 years to turn away development from the island and to provide permanent protection. Trenholm Walker provided legal representation for the residents pro bono during that period and served as the liaison between the community and the Coastal Conservation League. Q & A to follow.

What was the African American culture of Johns Island like fifty or more years ago, and how was it impacted by the development of Kiawah Island? More importantly, what kind of impact will currently planned urban development have on Johns Island? Bill Saunders will talk about the history and culture of this rural sea island – the second largest island on the East Coast – and the potentially devastating consequences that urban development will have on long-standing communities and Gullah culture.

The story of longleaf – exploited by old growth timbering and turpentining, industrial forests and urban development – is the history of the economy and culture of our region. Today, the longleaf ecosystem is 97% gone, and with it many rare plants and animals. Come and learn what you can do to help preserve and restore the Francis Marion and other bejeweled Southeastern forests.

MARCELA RABI, Hispanic Studies, will highlight the Amazon Rainforest as a case study analysis of the ways in which human activities cause environmental degradation, focusing on the micro- and macro-politics of development. She will show the connection between local sustainability, governmental policies, foreign interests and other stakeholders in the spectrum of rainforest deforestation.

Prof. Rashford takes a look at the root of the world environmental crisis as it relates to culture-based human reproduction success and our need for an ever-increasing mode of intensive adaptation. He discusses humanity’s species-specific capacity for innovation, but contends that ecological crises can be resolved only with a deep comprehension of the paradigm from which these problems developed.

Co-Presenters: PROF. TIM CALLAHAN, Geology and Environmental Geosciences, and a Representative from Water Missions International. Every individual’s life and health is dependent upon having an adequate supply of clean water. Yet 2.6 billion people lack access to this basic resource, according to a 2006 U.N. report. While water shortage is reaching an epidemic global crisis, multi-national corporations are increasingly treating water as a commodity to be bought and sold. Is water a basic human right? Following the film, Prof. Tim Callahan will discuss the international politics and policies of water resources. The WMI representative will talk about the work of this Charleston-based organization in providing water treatment technology for developing regions around the world.

Electronic Reserves: Processing Requests for Faculty

We are ready to begin processing, “hard copy and electronic reserves” materials for the spring semester. If you are not in position to bring your reserve materials at this time, please bring reserve items to be process to the Circulation desk as soon as you return from the Christmas break. This will allow us to process your request more quickly and accurately. Our objective is to try to have your material processed and available for your students the first week of classes.

Due to copyright laws, we cannot process course packets, please bring articles along with citations separated and collated. All paper documents must be scanned before they can appear on your electronic course page. We now have a document scanner with a duplexing feature which will allow us to scan double-sided copies. We are very excited about this feature along with many others. Although we are now able to scan two-sided copies, we only have one scanner with this feature. We are also encouraging faculty to use links to articles in the library’s databases. Using direct links to articles in the library databases will help you avoid copyright issues and also allow us to process your materials more quickly since there is no scanning involved. Once you have found an article you would like to use in one of our databases, the link can be emailed to reserves@cofc.edu. Please include the title, course number and instructor’s name in the email message.

Also, be sure to include the title as it appears on the course syllabus. Although, we try to process reserves as quickly as we receive them, please keep in mind there is a 72 hour processing period. It is very important that you submit the electronic reserve form before sending your reserve documents. Sending the documents before submitting the form will only delay processing.

Library Gets New Databases

The Addlestone Library has purchased 11 new databases for 2007.

Among the notable databases are:

The Early American Imprints, Series I: Evans, 1639-1800 contains 36,000 texts, covering a fascinating range of life in 17th- and 18th-century America. Agriculture and auctions, foreign affairs, diplomacy, literature, music, religion, the Revolutionary War, temperance, and witchcraft.
Gender Watch is a full text database of publications that focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subject areas. Gender Watch supports programs in business, education, literature and the arts, health sciences, history, political science, public policy, sociology and contemporary culture, gender and women's studies and more. Publications include academic and scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, regional publications, books, booklets and pamphlets, conference proceedings, and government, n-g-o and special reports.
The African American Experience is a searchable and browseable database of entries on African America life, drawn from encyclopedias and other reference books, monographs, novels and other literary works, collections of interviews, collections of primary source documents, audio clips, images, and Web sites.

The Early American Imprints database is already available on the library website. Information about as well as access to the other databases will become available in early spring 2007.

What is "PASCAL Delivers"?

“PASCAL Delivers” is a rapid book delivery service for the patrons of all PASCAL member institutions, which includes the College of Charleston, Addlestone Library. PASCAL Delivers begins with a single, web-based, unified catalog of library holdings. Library users search the PASCAL Catalog, locate books in any member-library, submit an electronic request for delivery of a book to their home institution, and receive those books within a few days. Pascal Delivers is part of the State-wide Electronic Academic Library.

What is PASCAL?

The Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries (PASCAL) is consortium of academic libraries in South Carolina. Pascal is a strategic initiative launched by South Carolina's public and private academic libraries in conjunction with their parent institutions: the Commission on Higher Education (CHE), the SC Independent Colleges & Universities (SCICU), the Office of State Chief Information Officer, the State Library, and the Department of Archives and History. Charleston Conference This Week

The Charleston Conference is an informal annual gathering of librarians, publishers, electronic resource managers, consultants, and vendors of library materials in Charleston, SC, in November, to discuss issues of importance to them all. It is designed to be a collegial gathering of individuals from different areas who discuss the same issues in a non-threatening, friendly, and highly informal environment. Presidents of companies discuss and debate with library directors, acquisitions librarians, reference librarians, serials librarians, collection development librarians, and many, many others. Begun in 1980, the Charleston Conference has grown from 20 participants in 1980 to over 1,000 in 2005.

Announcing the “Thursday @ Three” Addlestone Sessions:
Every Thursday this semester starting September 28th the Addlestone library will hold a session on the practical use of technology for teaching, learning and research. Building on the success of our past workshops with applications such as PowerPoint, web editing, and Excel, these sessions will be offered on a variety of emerging technology topics. Individual sessions will still address hands on basics of particular applications (i.e. PowerPoint, web editing), but will also include how to effectively search a database or the web for academic research as well as highlighting emerging technology trends (i.e. Podcasts, Blogging, RSS) or how to avoid and deal with common computer/internet problems such as spy ware and viruses. Other sessions are being developed.

Sessions will be held in Addlestone room 120 from 3 – 4:30pm. Class size is limited to 22 pre-registered attendees per session. Participants may register for a session by contacting Jared Seay via email with subject line: LIBRARY SESSIONS (seayj@cofc.edu) or leaving a voice mail (953- 1428) and indicating the session and date they wish to attend.

The heated competition during Monday night's RISK game in the Rotunda proved to be a crowd favorite. Stay tuned for another exciting game night soon!

Evan shows that he is the master of all things trivial during Tuesday night's You Don't Know Jack trivia contest. Legends were made, feelings were hurt, but most importantly, fun was had by all!

The screening of the Lost Skeleton of Cadavra on the south side of the John Rivers Garden on Wednesday evening brought many out to see the lost B-movie satire (and favorite of our intrepid Media Collections Librarian, Jared Seay). Fortunately, the weather cooperated and the movie was enjoyed by all.

Cathy Evans Joins Media Collections Staff

Cathy Evans is the newest member of the Addlestone Reference Department. Cathy will be assisting with the management of Media Collections and developing programs and special events.

Her extensive experience in program design (film / speaker series) as the former curator of the John Rivers Communications Museum will be put to use as the library begins developing such events. Cathy will be working to create in-depth, educational outreach programs for CofC students, faculty, and staff, as well as for members of the local community. These programs will help the Addlestone Library be a more relevant force in the community, increasing its public visibility and making it more integral to the community and to the campus. The programs will utilize and highlight the library’s media collection, particularly recent documentary films.

Who Else Can Use the Library?

It goes without saying that persons who are taking College of Charleston courses, faculty and staff and participants in most academic programs may use the building and borrow books from the library. However, we often receive queries about who else can use the library, and there are many answers to this question. First of all, the library is a public building and everyone is welcome to come in and use materials in the building. As far as borrowing books, all borrowers must be at least eighteen years of age. Here is a rundown on groups that are eligible for borrowing:

● Persons with a current identification card from one of the following Charleston Academic Library Consortium institutions can borrow up to 5 books for a two week period:

Charleston Southern University
The Citadel
The Medical University of South Carolina
Trident Technical College

● South Carolina state residents who are over 65 may borrow books free of charge

● Alumni who have paid their current annual dues or who have a lifetime membership may borrow books without charge.

● Persons not covered by these categories who are 18 years or older may become a Friend of the Library for $40.00 per year. Friends of the library may borrow up to 5 books for a two week borrowing period.

Kristen DeVoe Joins Library Staff

Kristen DeVoe is the newest new face at the library. She works primarily in technical services as the Systems and Electronic Resources Librarian overseeing the library's access to electronic resources. But she also spends time serving patrons at the reference desk.

Kristen was born in Cincinnati but was raised and honed to perfection in New Orleans and east Tennessee. She received her undergraduate in history at the College of Charleston with a specialization in Asian studies. She received her graduate degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina last year and now calls Charleston her home. When she is not holding the Addlestone Library together electronically, Kristen greatly enjoys sewing and making things. She is especially fond of wielding a glue stick to great effect in her many creations.

Record Spending on Video Materials

According to Shera Scott, Accounting and Library Materials Manager of the Addlestone Library, the library has spent $31,526 on DVD and VHS media this fiscal year as of this morning. This month also marks one year since the library acquired the original media collection, and this expenditure represents the addition of more than 2000 titles since then.

Library Adjuncts Honored

Addlestone Interlibrary Loan and Reference librarians Ann Cotton and Beverly Gumb were honored today as adjunct faculty members at a ceremony in the Beaty Center.

Both of these distinguished librarians have been faithfully serving the Reference Department in Interlibrary loan and the Reference Desk since 1993. Their warmth and dedication are well known, and their efforts have made ILL the respected icon of efficient service and productivity that it is. All of the library staff congratulate Ann and Beverly for a great job.

Shoah Photo Exhibit

Yom HaShoah, literally, the day of the whirlwind, is observed by Jews worldwide as a day of mourning for the six million men, women, and children who, between 1938 and 1945, were butchered by the Nazis for only one reason—because they were Jews.

Dr. Joseph Rubin, photo archivist of the Jewish Heritage Collection, has prepared a moving exhibition of restored photographs featuring Charlestonians and residents of South Carolina who knew the horror of the Holocaust first-hand.

The photo exhibit is currently on display in Special Collections, on the third floor of the Addlestone Library. To view a related slide presentation, click here:

New Search Engine

This week Microsoft launched its own academic search engine, Windows Live Academic http://academic.live.com/

Windows Live Academic is in beta mode. It currently indexes content related to computer science, physics, electrical engineering, and related subject areas. Academic search enables its users to search for peer reviewed journal articles contained in journal publisher portals and on the Web.

New Campus Card & New Printers

Beginning May 8^th, the old Cougar ID Card will be deactivated. New cards will be distributed from the Cougar Card Office starting May 15^th. The office is open Monday - Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. What this means in terms of the library is that if you have any money on your vending account, you need to use it by May 8^th. Money in the discretionary account will automatically be transferred to your new card.

Coordinating with the new cards, the Copy Center will be replacing the public machines in the copier rooms from May 9^th -12^th . Also there will be a new printer for use by the public.

A Blog for the Science Community and Beyond (From Your Science Librarian’s Desk)

Science Reference Librarian Dongmei Cao started a blog “From Your Science Librarian’s Desk” (http://scilibrarian.wordpress.com) on January 23, 2006 as a new communication tool to keep the College’s science community informed of newly acquired library resources and open Internet resources that related to science and technology.

The blog is featured on the hot spot of the Library’s Web site. If you use any RSS feeds reader/news aggregator (Bloglines, Google Reader, Sharpreader, etc.), the blog’s RSS feed URL is: http://scilibrarian.wordpress.com/feed.

What’s the purpose of the blog? It’s intended to provide the following to the College’s science community, other fellow science and technology/engineering librarians (and those cool next generation librarians):

science related library news (e.g. databases, e-journals, database features, etc. that related to the sciences);

info about science and technology related Internet resources (e.g. Web resources for specific subjects esp. those related to biology and chemistry, open access resources related to the sciences);

info about information and Web technology (e.g. specialized/vertical search engines, open source software, Google news, Web 2.0 technology such as blogs, wikis, social book-marking and tagging, etc.);

other info that will be of interest to the science community, and to the sci-tech librarians in general.

The blog is now featured prominently on Librarian.net (“Science Librarian” on the Sidebar), one of the 10 Blogs to Read in 2006 that published on LISNews.org. It’s also linked from Canada’s National Science Library and Publisher NRC CISTI’s technology architect Richard Akerman’s blog Science Library Pad as one of the science library blogs. The blog’s feed is indexed in LISFeeds.com, a main directory and search engine for librarian oriented blogs and feeds around the world.

Considering the blog’s rather young life (2 months and 9 days old), its statistics is quite encouraging: for the past 30 days, it had average 25 views per day, the most viewed post had 34 views for the past month; over the 2 months period, it had over 120 views pay day for several peak days, the most viewed post had 58 views in just one month (the stats doesn’t count the blogger/author’s own visits). Some of the original writings/posts were cited by other well-known researchers/bloggers such as the open access researcher Steven Suber (Open Access News).

She would love to hear from faculty and students in the CofC’s science community and others, let her know what you think, what you would like to see included on this science librarian blog (please email her). Any ideas, suggestions, observations are welcome.

Addlestone Media Room Services Coming on Strong

It has been about a year since the video/DVD media collection was transferred to the Addlestone Library from the College Relations and Media Communications lab in the Education Center. Since then the media room has received increasing use by students and faculty. Faculty members have ordered a number of new titles and the librarians are working to replace missing or damaged ones. New televisions and flat screen VHS/DVD viewing equipment are now available as well. The Media Room is located on the third floor of the library in room 350. It contains viewing stations and headphones for individual or small group video viewing.

Hospitality & Tourism Index
This database covers scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism. This comprehensive database contains more than 490,000 records from 500 titles, with coverage dating as far back as 1965.

Health Source: Consumer Edition
This database provides access to nearly 300 full text, consumer health periodicals and indexing and abstracts to over 300 additional periodicals. The database covers topics such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, aging, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's health, women's health, etc. Full text information in this database dates as far back as 1985.

Are you ready to become a part of the blogosphere? Why blog? There are many reasons. You will learn a few here (or add a few of your own after the workshop). Addlestone Library on CofC Radio

As part of the library’s outreach effort, reference librarian Steven Profit is collaborating with the staff of the College of Charleston’s radio station to promote the library to the college radio audience. A disc jockey or DJ himself, Steven mentions the library resources he consults in scripting his on-the-air segments.

This outreach effort is beneficial for both the library and the radio station. The hot link to the radio station’s streaming webcast is featured prominently on the library’s web page, making the broadcast easily accessible to all who visit the library online. Steven will assist the radio staff in selecting brief narratives to adapt for theatrical radio productions. The radio station has purchased 40 cool, retro-looking headphones that will be donated to the library. The headphones, emblazoned with the station’s logo, will advertise CofC Radio and add to Circulation Services headphone cache. Students can request the headphones at the library’s main circulation desk.
